Everything you need to understand before you choose your dream wig

The DMUSE Wig Guide

getting started

Choosing a wig involves a few decisions you might not have made before — cap construction, hair density, length, sizing, hair type. None of it is complicated once it's explained, and that's what this guide is for. Whether you're after a Ready to Ship wig, an Express wig, or a fully bespoke one, the more you understand these terms, the more confident you'll feel about what you're buying. With a bespoke wig you'll choose every detail yourself. With Ready to Ship and Express, some of these are already decided for you — so this guide helps you check that what's on offer is genuinely right for you before you order.Take it section by section, or jump straight to the part you need.

In this guide:

Your three wig options

Before the detail, it helps to know which route suits you — because the right wig isn't only about the style, it's about how soon you need it and how much is made around you.

We recommend:

A Ready to Ship Wig

One-of-a-kind pre-made styles, dropped monthly and dispatched within 5 days. You're choosing from finished pieces, so what you see is what arrives – no wait, no build time.

By far best wig l've ever owned. Even for an absolute newbie to laying down lace, it looked undetectable. The hair is so soft too!

We recommend:

Cap types

The cap is the base your wig is built on. It affects how the wig sits, how you can style it, and how natural the hairline looks. There are four types.

Choosing Ready to Ship or Express? The cap type is already set on these wigs and can't be changed, so check which cap your chosen wig has and that it suits how you like to style your hair. Going bespoke? You'll choose your cap type as part of the design process — and if you're unsure which suits you, a consultation will help.

Lace Front

Features a 13×6" HD lace front for unlimited parting space. Closed wefted back section with optional combs and an adjustable removable elastic band for added security. It's best styled in low buns or fully down for a seamless finish without adhesives.

Glueless Lace Front

Features a 13×6" HD lace front with anti-slip silicone strips, an adjustable elastic band and optional combs, all working together to hold the wig securely without adhesive. Closed wefted back section with optional combs and an adjustable removable elastic band for added security. It's best styled in low buns or ponytails for a seamless finish. Our most beginner-friendly cap type.

Full Lace Cap

HD lace throughout, which makes it the most versatile for styling and can be partened anywhere across the cap. It has an added crown material for strength, adjustable straps for added security and extra lace at the nape to allow for an undetectable ponytail. Adhesives would be recommended for sleek high ponytails, although can be worn glueless if worn down.

Glueless full lace cap

HD lace throughout, which makes it the most versatile for styling — including high updos and partings anywhere across the cap. It has an added crown material for strength, adjustable straps, a silicone-coated wired ear-tab area and transparent adjustable strings at the nape, so it stays put without glue.

Hair density

Density is the thickness of the hair, or how heavy or full the wig feels once it's on. It's a personal preference, and there's no single right answer — it depends on the look you're after. Choosing Ready to Ship or Express? Your wig comes in a set density — check what it is so you know how full it'll feel. Going bespoke? Density is yours to choose. Not sure? Take a look at the detailed density guide or book a consultation and we'll help you decide.

150% density

This is our thinnest density available – we would recommend this if you want the hair to feel a little lighter and not too heavy – a perfect summer option.

180% density

This is our medium type of density and is often the most recommended as it is a middle of the road option if you are unsure.

200% density

If you like a slightly thicker feel to your hair, we can offer 200% density. This is also great for longer units to give a luxurious feel.

Hair types

Every DMUSE wig is made from 100% ethically sourced human hair — which is what lets it look, move and style like your own. Within that, there are two lines to choose from: raw and virgin. Both are real human hair and both will look and feel natural — the difference is in the sourcing, the upkeep and the price. If you're torn, you can ask for a quote on both and decide once you've seen the difference side by side.Choosing Ready to Ship or Express? The hair type is already set on these wigs — check which line your chosen wig uses so you know what to expect from styling and upkeep. Going bespoke? You'll choose between raw and virgin as part of your order, and you're welcome to request a quote for both before you commit. Book a consultation if you'd like help weighing them up.
LUXE LINE

Raw hair

Considered the best quality hair available, raw hair is sourced from just one or two donors, which gives it a consistency that reacts beautifully to colour and heat. Our raw hair is the starting material that we professionally colour to achieve your desired shade. We'll always recommend a heat protector, as with any hair, but raw hair holds up exceptionally well.
PREMIUM LINE

Virgin hair

Made up of hair from multiple donors, virgin hair gives a lovely finish and is the more accessible of the two. It tends to want a little more hydrating product to keep it silky over time, so it suits you well if you're happy to build that into your routine. Our professional colouring can appear more multi-tonal on virgin hair.

Length

Length is measured in inches, from the top of the cap to the ends of the hair. It's worth picturing where each length will fall on you, as the same measurement can sit differently depending on your height.
Short - 10-14″

Medium - 16-20″

An everyday, manageable length that's easy to live with.
Long - 22-30″

Long - 22-30″

What we'd happily call mermaid hair.

Sizing

Cap size is one of the most important decisions you'll make, because a well-fitting wig is a comfortable, secure, confident one. Most people fit a standard size, and DMUSE also offers custom sizing on bespoke wigs.

To find your size, you'll need a few measurements: circumference, front to nape, ear to ear across the forehead, ear to ear over the top, temple to temple, and nape. Watch our tutorial on how to measure your head accurately before you start — it makes all the difference. (100% custom sizes are also available)

Choosing Ready to Ship or Express? These come in standard sizes — measure first and check yours matches before you order. Going bespoke? You can have a fully custom size made to your exact measurements, so there's no guesswork.

If sizing is the part you're least sure about, you don't have to work it out alone. Book a consultation and we'll measure with you and recommend the right fit.
